A Little Smile

Page 1: A Sad Morning

It was a cold morning.
The sky was grey.
The wind was strong.
Leaves flew in the air.

Sara walked slowly to school.
Her face looked sad.
Her eyes were full of tears.

Sara’s cat was very sick.
Her cat, Mimi, did not eat.
Mimi just slept all day.
Sara was very worried.

She told her mom,
“Mimi is my best friend.”
Her mom said, “Don’t worry. Let’s hope she gets better.”
But Sara was still sad.

At school, children ran and played.
Some kids laughed and shouted.
But Sara stayed quiet.
She walked to her class.
She sat on the last bench.
No one looked at her.

Tom was a boy in her class.
He was always smiling.
He liked to draw and laugh.
He saw Sara sitting alone.
He thought, “Why is she sad?”

He did not know what to say.
So, he did something small.
He smiled. Just a little smile.

Sara looked up.
She saw Tom’s smile.
She did not smile back.
But her eyes became soft.

The next day, Sara came to school again.
She was still sad.
Tom saw her again.
This time, he waved his hand.

Sara gave a small smile.
Very small.
But it was the first smile in two days.

Tom sat near her.
He said, “Hi, I’m Tom.”
Sara said, “Hi.”
Then she looked down.

Tom did not leave.
He opened his notebook.
He showed her a drawing.
It was a cat.

Sara looked at the drawing.
She smiled again.
“A cat!” she said.
Tom nodded.
“Yes, I love cats. Do you?”

Sara said, “Yes. My cat is sick.”
Tom said, “Oh no. What happened?”
Sara told him everything.

Tom listened carefully.
He did not laugh.
He did not talk too much.
He just listened.

Sara felt better.
It was good to talk.
She said, “Thank you.”
Tom said, “I hope your cat gets better soon.”
Sara said, “Me too.”

At lunch time, Sara sat with Tom.
He shared his sandwich.
She shared her apple.
They laughed a little.

Later, in class, they worked together.
They drew more animals.
Sara laughed again.
The teacher saw her.
She smiled too.

After school, Sara went home.
She ran to see Mimi.
Mimi was still weak,
but she opened her eyes.

Sara smiled.
“Mimi, I met a new friend today!”

Each day, Sara felt a bit better.
She still worried about Mimi,
but now she had someone to talk to.
Someone who cared.

Tom and Sara became good friends.
They played together.
They studied together.
They laughed together.

One day, Sara brought a photo to school.
It was Mimi, feeling much better!
Tom smiled big.
“That’s great news!”

Sara said, “Thank you for smiling at me.”
Tom said, “It was just a little smile.”
Sara said, “Yes, but it changed everything.”
