Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931, in the small town of Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, India. His father was a boat owner, and the family was not financially well-off.
Despite the struggles, Kalam was curious, disciplined, and hard-working from an early age. He would wake up at 4 AM, deliver newspapers before school to help support his family, and study late into the night.

He graduated in physics and later studied aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology, where he barely paid his fees by borrowing money and scholarships.

He worked day and night, often sleeping on the floor next to missile launch sites. His dedication earned him immense respect from colleagues and the nation.

One of Kalam’s defining moments was failureтАФwhen SLV-III crashed in its first attempt. As project director, he expected blame. But his mentor, Dr. Satish Dhawan, took the blame publicly and gave Kalam the credit when it succeeded the next year.
