His father was a boat owner, and his mother was a housewife.
Despite poverty, young Kalam had a deep interest in science and mathematics.

Known as the Missile Man of India for his contribution to IndiaтАЩs missile and space programs.
Worked with ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) and DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization).
Played a key role in the successful testing of nuclear weapons in 1998 (Pokhran-II).

Served as the 11th President of India (2002тАУ2007).
